"I want to show you Coimbra, you will like it. Let's go.
Give me your arm and come with me, come on!"
in Só, Carta a Manoel, de António Nobre
Cut in half by the waters of the Mondego, Coimbra is a city that has been blessed by the gods with beauty and history, making it a Portuguese pearl to discover.
The former capital of the kingdom, Coimbra was the most important city in the defense of the Mondego. That led to the building of a country of brave and courageous Lusitanos. Years later, the city was called to serve the country again, this time in the service of knowledge, when D. Dinis installed in Coimbra, in 1290, the first university in Portugal. The student body of Coimbra played a key role in the rest of the country's history as a defender of the values of freedom and democracy, serving as a bastion of revolt and facing the dictatorship of the Estado Novo.
Within the University, Fado de Coimbra was born, a unique musical expression in the world. His poems and the artists, with their crossed capes over their shoulders, echo them, invoke sweet serenades about the love and longing for a woman, for the city, and for the Academy. This longing comes even carried on guitars that have a tear-shaped volute. A space that did so much for culture and knowledge, that saw several significant periods of history, architecture, art pass through it and that played a pivotal role in the development of a country and its language, it could not fail to live forever as a Heritage UNESCO World of Humanity. It is connected to Alta and Rua da Sofia, which include other historic buildings linked to the institution's history.
Coimbra was also the stage for one of the most beautiful and tragic love stories that still survive in the Portuguese imagination today: the forbidden love between D. Pedro de Portugal and D. Inês de Castro. It was in Coimbra that the heir to the throne of Portugal and the Galician noble lived the blaze of their romance. Throughout the city, you can find several places connected to this forbidden love.
To visit Coimbra is to go back generations, to look through the lens of the main actor at the building of a country, a Lusitanian culture, with passionate romance and longing. It is to savor the present, discovering the secrets of each corner, taste divine delicacies, and meet hospitable and authentic people. It is also an open door to the future whenever you want to visit us again. We are waiting for you 😊
