University of Coimbra Alta and Sofia
The University of Coimbra is the oldest in the country and one of the oldest in the world. Initially confined to the Royal Palace, the University gradually expanded throughout Coimbra, transforming its landscape and transforming it into a university city, earning the label "Coimbra, City of Knowledge." Since 2013, the University of Coimbra - Alta and Sofia, the architectural ensemble that illustrates the various functions and eras that have marked the institution's history, has deservedly been classified as a World Heritage Site.

Joanine Library
Considered one of the most beautiful in the world by The Telegraph, the Joanina Library was built in the 17th century using newly discovered gold reserves in Brazil. It is located in the Paço das Escolas of the University of Coimbra.

Machado de Castro National Museum
Named after the renowned Coimbra sculptor Machado de Castro, this is one of the most important Fine Arts museums in Portugal. Since 2013, it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Old Cathedral of Coimbra

Church and Monastery of Santa Cruz
The Monastery of Santa Cruz is one of the oldest and most important monuments in Coimbra, founded in 1131. Declared a National Pantheon, it is where the first two Kings of Portugal are buried: D. Afonso Henriques and D. Sancho I.

Barbican Gate and Almedina Tower
Heading toward Alta de Coimbra, in the oldest part of the city, you'll find the Porta Barbacã, a broken arch that represents the city's second walled area, built to strengthen its defenses. To enter historic Coimbra, you must pass through the first walled area through the Porta and Torre Almedina. This passage acts as a gateway to the past, revealing a more intimate area of the city with a wealth of history to share.

Aqueduct of Saint Sebastian
Also known as 'Arcos do Jardim', given its location adjacent to the Botanical Garden of the University of Coimbra, this aqueduct was ordered to be built in 1570 by King D. Sebastião, to supply water to the upper part of the city.

Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha
Situated on the banks of the Mondego River, it was initially seized by the Canons Regular of Saint Augustine. Years later, in 1314, Queen Saint Isabella took an interest in refounding the monastery, ordering the construction of new buildings, notably the cloister and the church.

Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova
A 17th-century monastery dedicated to Queen Saint Isabel, it was built to replace the Santa Clara-a-Velha Monastery, which was repeatedly ravaged by the Mondego River floods. This monument recently underwent extensive renovation and is a cultural and tourist attraction for the city.

Portugal of the Little Ones
Portugal dos Pequenitos is the oldest theme park in the country, open since 1940. This theme park offers small-scale representations of buildings from the city of Coimbra, Portuguese culture, and former colonial territories.

Farm of Tears
misc image Farm of Tears One of the most symbolic locations in the tragic love story between Dom Pedro of Portugal and Dom Inês de Castro. Here, the two lovers exchanged vows of love. Luís de Camões also created the legend that Inês's blood remained trapped in the rocks of the Fonte das Lágrimas streambed, turning the waters red to this day.

Pedro and Agnes Bridge
Designed by Adão da Fonseca and Cecil Balmond as part of the Polis Program, this pedestrian bridge was conceived to provide a closer connection between the river banks and provide panoramic views of the city. Its anti-symmetrical architecture, made entirely of steel with laminated glass railings in four colors—yellow, blue, green, and pink—creates a colorful canvas over the water and the walkway, lending it a special charm.
